Deuteronomy 6; 34
Moses' Farewell & Death
Forty years in the wilderness are ending. The generation of unbelief lies buried behind them. A new generation stands on the plains of Moab, looking west. Moses, one hundred and twenty years old and his eye undimmed, delivers his last sermons to a people he will not follow across the Jordan. He gives them the Shema — the watchword of Israel's faith down to this day: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD. He gives them the law again, a last blessing, and a song. Then he climbs Mount Nebo. He sees the whole land spread out before him, the land God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And then Moses dies, and God Himself buries him in a valley in Moab, and no man knows where.
