Matthew 6:9-13

9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He first warned them against two distortions — the Pharisee’s love of being seen at prayer in public places, and the pagan’s confidence that sheer volume of words would move a God who needs to be worn down. In their place He gave a prayer that is brief, ordered, and inexhaustible: six petitions, opening with a Father in heaven and closing with His eternal glory. In fewer than sixty words He maps the whole interior life of the Kingdom citizen — what to desire, what to ask, what to fear, and where to anchor when everything is uncertain.
